Frequently asked

Questions, answered.

A few of the things people ask us most often. If something you’re wondering isn’t here, the next best step is a Complimentary Consult.

What is functional medicine?

Functional medicine is a systems-based approach to healthcare that focuses on identifying and addressing the root causes of symptoms rather than just managing them. Instead of looking at isolated symptoms, we look at how different systems in the body are interacting — such as digestion, hormones, metabolism, immune function, and stress response — to understand the full picture of your health.

How is functional medicine different than the care I would get from my regular doctor?

Conventional medicine is excellent for acute care, diagnosis, and medical emergencies. Functional medicine differs in that it tends to spend more time investigating why symptoms are happening in the first place. We often use more in-depth lab testing, longer appointments, and a more personalized approach that looks at lifestyle, nutrition, environment, and physiology together rather than providing a temporary bandaid for the symptoms the real problem is creating.

Think of it like this: you have indigestion. If you go to your regular doctor, you will likely be prescribed antacids and a PPI (proton pump inhibitor). With functional medicine, we ask “what is causing the indigestion?” Possibly low or high stomach acid. Alterations in gut bacteria, increased inflammation leading to leaky gut…and a slew of other possible causes. If you find and treat the cause, the indigestion will resolve. Similar endpoints — but one solves the problem while the other simply gives temporary relief with medication.

Do you replace my primary care doctor? Should I stop taking my prescribed medications?

No. We do not replace your primary care physician and we do not function as emergency or acute care. We see ourselves as a complement to your existing medical team, with a focus on long-term optimization and root-cause support. We also do not advise stopping or changing any prescribed medications without direction from the provider who prescribed them.

What types of conditions do you help optimize?

We specialize in metabolic health, gut health, and hormonal health, with a focus on uncovering underlying drivers of imbalance.

This includes concerns like fatigue, stubborn weight changes, blood sugar instability, inflammation, and achiness. We also frequently work with gut-related symptoms such as bloating, irregular digestion, food sensitivities, brain fog, and skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

On the hormonal side, we support both women and men. For women, this may include PMS, perimenopause, menopause symptoms, cycle irregularities, and hormone-related mood or energy changes. For men, this can include testosterone optimization, energy, libido, recovery, and metabolic shifts that often occur with age.

Am I a good candidate for functional medicine?

Functional medicine tends to work best for people who are curious about the root causes of their symptoms and open to a more hands-on, personalized approach to their health.

Our work together is collaborative, which means your input and participation matter. Depending on your goals, this may include gradual changes to nutrition, lifestyle habits, sleep, stress management, and following a personalized plan over time. You don’t need to do everything perfectly — we’re here to support you through the process.

If you’re looking for deeper answers and are willing to take an active role in your health journey, there’s a good chance you’ll be a great fit for our model.

What can I expect if I decide to work with Ivy House?

We begin with a complimentary 30-minute consult where we discuss your main concerns, what you’ve already tried, and whether our approach is a good fit for your goals. From there, we outline a roadmap so you understand what working together would look like.

If you move forward, care is highly personalized and typically begins with advanced lab testing that goes beyond standard primary care panels. These results help us identify underlying patterns and create a targeted, individualized plan.

True health doesn’t come in a pill — and like all good things, it takes time. Most patients work with us anywhere from 3 to 12+ months depending on complexity and goals. Once goals are achieved, we typically transition into maintenance care to help sustain results long-term.

Do you use peptides in your clinic? What exactly are they and how do they work?

Yes. When appropriate, we may incorporate peptides as part of a broader treatment plan that also includes nutrition, lifestyle changes, and targeted supplementation.

Peptides are short chains of amino acids that act as signaling molecules in the body. They essentially “tell” the body to perform specific functions — such as improving recovery, supporting metabolism, enhancing sleep, or optimizing tissue repair — depending on the peptide used.

They are not a standalone solution, but when used strategically, they can be a helpful tool to support deeper physiological change alongside foundational health work.

Do you take insurance?

No, we do not accept insurance.

The main reason is that insurance-based care typically requires shorter visits, limited testing options, and treatment decisions that are driven by billing codes rather than individualized care. Our model is designed to allow more time, deeper investigation, and the ability to use advanced testing and personalized treatment plans that are not restricted by insurance requirements.

We can, however, provide documentation if you would like to submit for potential out-of-network reimbursement, depending on your plan.

What is your pricing structure?

We offer a few different options depending on your needs, including structured programs, membership-based care, and select à la carte services.

That said, our primary focus is long-term care rather than one-off visits. Functional medicine is most effective when we can follow the full progression of your health journey, which is why many of our offerings are designed around ongoing support rather than single sessions.

We discuss in more detail with you after your initial consult what option we recommend to suit your needs.

Do you offer virtual appointments?

Yes, we currently offer in-person, virtual, and over-the-phone encounters.
